"The Flyers won a game in a shootout, the Flyers won a game in a shootout"
The win vaulted the Flyers into 7th place, but with the Capitals pulling out a comeback win over Atlanta the Flyers only hold a two point lead over them. Meanwhile the Leafs beat the Sabres dropping them 3 points behind the Flyers now.
The game should never have gotten to overtime. The Flyers scored the 1st goal, a breakaway by Richards and scored again in the 3rd on a wrap around by Briere. The Rangers quickly struck back to make it 2-2. The Flyers paid them back with another goal of their own, again by Briere to make it 3-2. Then the wheels came off again. The Rangers scored again late to send the game into overtime. Despite a much improved effort by the Flyers in all facets of the game, they are still plagued by pucks going off their own players into their net (2 tonight) and not being able to close out games.
The Flyers' 2nd ranked powerplay was useless tonight. They even had a powerplay in overtime to make it 4 on 3 with nothing close to a goal. They, too often, try to thread the needle to just gain the blueline instead of outmanning the opposition and getting shots from the point. Wasted opportunities.
That said "Hey, we're in 7th place. Go Flyers!"
A game by game wrap up of the Philadelphia Flyers as they march towards the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Thoughts about the team, players, and news will also be included on non game days.
